Church Marketing Consultant Chris Mefford

Helping people find your church, and actually show up.

I'm Chris Mefford, a church marketing consultant based in San Diego. I've been the CMO of a large church, led SEO for national consumer brands, and spent 17+ years figuring out how people find things. Now I help churches get found on Google and AI search, and make that first visit feel a whole lot less scary.

01

Your church isn't the problem. Your front door is.

Most churches I talk to are doing real ministry. The people are kind, the teaching is solid, and the kids program is better organized than most daycares. But attendance is flat, and nobody can quite say why.

Here's what I usually find: the church is invisible at the exact moment someone is looking for one.

  • They search "church near me" and you don't show up on Google Maps.
  • They ask ChatGPT for a family-friendly church, and it names three others.
  • They land on your website and can't find service times, parking, or what happens with their kids.
  • They see "Ignite," "Rooted," and "Connect Card" and quietly feel like outsiders.

None of that is a ministry problem. It's a marketing problem. And marketing problems are fixable.

Who I help:

  • Churches that are growing and want their online presence to catch up with what's actually happening on Sundays
  • Churches that are stuck and want an honest outside look at why visitors aren't coming back
  • Church plants that want to get the foundation right from day one
  • Communications teams of one (or one volunteer) who are drowning and need a clear plan, not another 40-tab spreadsheet

02

Why churches work with me

Most church marketing consultants come from one world: either church communications or tech. I've spent real time in both, plus a few detours that turned out to matter a lot.

  • I've been the church CMO. As Chief Marketing Officer at The Rock San Diego, I lived the Sunday-to-Sunday grind: series launches, Easter crowds, volunteer teams, and the never-ending "can we get this in the bulletin?" requests. I know what's realistic for a church staff, because I was one.
  • I lead SEO and AI search for national brands. My day job is helping major consumer websites show up in Google and in AI tools like ChatGPT. Churches get that same playbook, translated into plain English and scaled to your budget.
  • I've marketed live events at arena scale. At The Dave Ramsey Organization, I worked on large arena events and national TV and radio campaigns. Turns out getting people into a room is getting people into a room, whether it's an arena or a 150-seat sanctuary.
  • I've led brand and culture as a CMO in business too. At TCWGlobal, I learned how to tell a clear story when everyone in the building has a different opinion about it. (Sound familiar?)
  • I wrote a book about leadership. I'm a co-author of the Amazon bestseller Leadership Is Overrated.
  • I teach this stuff for a living. I speak and lead workshops at colleges and conferences across the country, and I'm building Not Another Church Marketing Conference, a 30-seat, application-only gathering for church communicators in San Diego.

17+ years across SEO, brand, broadcast, and content strategy. One goal for your church: more of the right people walking through the doors.

How I help churches

AI search and church SEO

People now ask ChatGPT, Gemini, and Google's AI to recommend a church. I'll show you what those tools say about you today, then fix the signals they rely on: your Google Business Profile, reviews, local listings, website content, and community conversations, including Reddit.

Visitor experience audit

I go through your church the way a first-time visitor does, from the first Google search to the parking lot. You get a scored report, a short list of what's costing you visitors, and the order to fix things in. (It's the professional version of the Visit Like a Stranger test.)

Website and Plan Your Visit strategy

I help you rebuild the pages that matter most to newcomers: your homepage, Plan Your Visit page, kids page, and community program pages. Clear words, real photos, and no required forms standing between someone and your service times.

Brand and messaging

Who you are, who you're for, and how to say it in plain language. Including what to do with ministry names that need a translator.

Staff and volunteer training

Workshops for your communications team, staff, or volunteers on AI search, Google, writing for visitors, and photography. Built for churches where "the marketing team" is one person and a very loyal volunteer.

Speaking

Keynotes and breakout sessions for church conferences, denominational gatherings, and leadership events on how people find churches today.

How it works

  1. A free 15-minute call. You tell me what's going on. I ask a lot of questions. No pitch deck, no pressure.
  2. A quick look under the hood. Before we talk again, I check what Google and the major AI tools say about your church, and how your website holds up on a phone.
  3. A clear plan. You get a short, prioritized list: what to fix first, what can wait, and what you can do in-house versus where you might want help.
  4. Do it together, or on your own. Some churches take the plan and run. Others want me alongside for a few months. Either is fine.

I work with churches across the country, remotely, and in person in Southern California.

FAQ

What does a church marketing consultant do? A church marketing consultant helps a church get found by the people looking for one, and makes the path from first search to first visit as easy as possible. For me, that means Google and AI search visibility, website and Plan Your Visit strategy, visitor experience, messaging, and training your team to keep it going.

Do you only work with big churches? No. Some of the best wins happen at churches of 100 or 200 people, where a few fixes to Google, the website, and photos make an outsized difference.

We don't have a marketing budget. Can you still help? Maybe more than you'd think. A lot of what moves the needle is free: your Google Business Profile, clear website copy, real photos, and honest reviews. The free resources on this page are a good place to start, and the first call is free too.

What is AI search, and why should my church care? More people now ask tools like ChatGPT and Google's AI for recommendations, including churches. Those tools recommend the churches they can find clear, consistent, trustworthy information about. If yours isn't one of them, you're missing visitors you never knew were looking.

Do you build websites? I focus on strategy, content, and search, and I'll work with your current web person or platform. If you need a new site, I can help you plan it and point you to builders I trust.

Do you work with churches outside San Diego? Yes. Most of the work happens remotely, and I travel for workshops and speaking.
